In 1992 we began to establish our own cherry orchards in
Washington State, where the climate and growing conditions
produce some of the World’s finest and most flavoursome produce.
Today we farm over 1500 acres of organic and conventional fruit
in Washington, making us one of the largest cherry growers in the
region and possibly the biggest organic cherry producer in the world.
Importantly we have established our orchards in different areas and
at different altitudes; to guard against losses due to the weather, and
to stretch the season by maintaining the highest possible quality for
the longest period of time.
Either side of the Washington harvests we source cherries globally to meet demand in the UK. We have a dedicated procurement
team to find and manage suppliers in the Northern and Southern
hemispheres; and our particular expertise in cherries means we are
able to maintain quality standards, as we move from one source
to the next, following the sun, and the growing seasons, around
the World.
With environmental issues in mind; we are increasing our use of sea
freight and where possible sourcing closer to home. In addition we
continue to reduce the amount of packaging we use, switching to
cornstarch based punnets and using recycled materials.
At JO Sims we are determined to maintain our position
as the UK’s leading producer and supplier of cherries.
We will continue to develop our orchards and the
varieties we grow in Washington, and in the UK
we will carry on investing in our operations
and facilities to ensure we remain the most
reliable source for the highest quality fruit.
