operations and facilities
Our packhouse is independently audited and equipped for flow-
wrapping, overwrapping, dried fruit packing and quad packing;
all of which are fully compliant to supermarket specifications.

We are the first UK fruit company to use a multi-head weigher
in its pack house. The new machine is more efficient, provides
increased productivity and, through average weight packing,
ensures less waste.

In addition we have introduced a fully computerised system,
to provide live stock control, improve accuracy and efficiency,
increase traceability and allow for greater analysis of the
production process.

Alongside our multi-head weigher, we have also introduced
manual average weighing systems for delicate fruit such as
Rainier cherries.

To ensure fruit reaches customers in prime condition, orders
are loaded directly onto temperature controlled vehicles with
the aid of a computerised load planning programme, utilising
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags & readers. As a result,
fast, efficient delivery to customers anywhere in the UK can be
achieved in time for next day trading.

We will continue to invest in our stock management, order
processing and load planning systems to offer truly reliable end-
to-end order processing, with tracking right down to pallet level Fruit from overseas is either transported directly to customers or to our purpose-built facilities in Spalding, Lincolnshire. On arrival, the produce goes into cold storage in our 75,000 sq.ft temperature controlled warehouse - one of the most up-to-date of its kind in the UK.

Ethylene scrubbers have been installed in the cold stores to remove ethylene and other hydrocarbon gases from the atmosphere, helping to maintain the quality and extend the storage potential of our fruit.

We also have two 24 pallet ripening rooms at
Spalding. Based on banana ripening equipment,
this state-of-the-art, partial pressure facility
provides the rapid cooling of produce in addition
to the normal function of ripening.

Furthermore, to stabilise the air and minimise
the risk of free moisture being introduced into
the rooms (to avoid growth of mold, mildew and
bacteria), air mixing and humidification take place
in an enlarged plenum chamber.

JO Sims is committed to providing the highest level
of service to deliver 100% customer satisfaction,
and we will continue to invest in our operations &
facilities accordingly.
