It all began in 1896 with Josiah Oliver Sims and a small site in
London’s Pudding Lane. From these modest beginnings we’ve
grown to become one of Europe’s most successful importers,
growers and suppliers of fresh fruit and fruit ingredients.
Throughout our 113-year history, we have thrived on the passion
and entrepreneurial spirit that Josiah instilled in the business.
It was with us in the early days when he would sail to America,
beach his boat, and then race the rising tide as he loaded the
fruit he had just bought from the local growers. It was with us
in the 30s when we opened our auction rooms in London’s
Borough Market; the 60s when we were the first to bring fresh
cranberries to the UK; and again in the 90s when created the
market for Indian grapes.
And it remains with us today as we continue to open up new
trade routes, introduce exciting new fruits (such as acai berries),
and pioneer new ingredient solutions for customers in the
UK and throughout Europe. |

JO Sims was founded by entrepreneur Josiah Oliver
Sims in London in 1896. Modern methods of farming
and transportation opened up new opportunities in
the fruit and vegetables trade and Josiah was keen
to play a part in developing this market.
With sons Victor and Wilfred, Josiah transformed
the family firm into a market leader, importing fruit
from Europe and the USA. Victor’s son Keith joined
the company in the 1950s and is still chairman
today. In 1990, Christopher, son of Keith and great-
grandson of Josiah, joined the family business and
is now managing director.
Originally based in London’s Pudding Lane and
later in the Borough Market, London, the company
moved to Spalding, Lincolnshire, in 1996. |

For more than a century, JO Sims has retained its
independence, heritage, passion, entrepreneurial
spirit and traditional values which have resulted
in many years of successful trading. With solid
managerial and financial foundations, the
company’s presence in this market is assured. |
